Toyota’s John Howett said today that they would prefer someone independent to fill the position of FIA President now that they have effectively dispensed with the controversial and confrontational Max Mosley.
“We would like to see someone independent, perhaps independent from any of us, either currently or historically. “It would mean a much better balance.”
Rumors have been flying about Jean Todt, former Ferrari boss, as Max’s replacement. Even some suggesting that Max will publicly endorse Jean Todt as his preferred successor.
I find that hard to believe but I submit that Bernie will have a very keen interest in who gets selected.

It would be nice for it to be someone who has no history with the teams… but at the same time, isn’t it easier to convince a fellow from the same cut of jib as you on things concerning your sport than it would be someone from the MotoGP side or sportscar side? I see the potential for conflict if Todt is president, but I also see how it could be good for someone relevant, experienced, and beyond successful in F1 to be running the show, and thats someone who I would want in charge.
Would we have had the KERS disaster with Todt? I suspect not. Would we have had the ridiculous aero changes? Probably not. Would the diffuser questions of earlier this season be left to linger for 2 months without an answer? Certainly not.
The problem with Max was he was head of the FIA for far too long after being removed from a garage. He forgot what was relevant to motorsport.
