Speedcar dead; A1GP far behind?

Middle East and Asia-based stock car series Speedcar has apparently hung it up according to GMM and the disappearance of their web site. After two seasons and drivers including Jacques Villeneuve, Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Vitantonio Liuzzi seems to have fallen prey to the economic crunch felt worldwide.

Equally concerning is the British arm of A1GP that handles the day-to-day administration has gone in to liquidation last Wednesday according to the Telegraph newspaper.

“Like many other companies in today’s difficult economic environment, we had cashflow problems and we haven’t been able to pay them (vendors),” an A1GP spokesman said

Well now there’s no home for second tier F1 youngsters and former veterans who couldn’t stomach moving to America to be in NASCAR like Juan Pablo Montoya. NASCAR is taking a beating anyway after the American car companies are bleeding profusely and General Motors has become Government Motors. Indycar fired Tony George because the series has shot its own foot off, just when the fan base was really trying to support it, by staging a fast parade of boring cars and miserable racing. ALMS has been orphaned by Father Audi and Mother Peugeot this season leaving the LMP1 category adrift and essentially Acura versus Acura.

So what’s left? F1, GP2 and Max’s new, recession-proof F2. Any guesses on the health of these series?
