I’m not sure how much of a consolation prize this is, but in an anonymous Autosport poll of Formula 1 team bosses, Sebastian Vettel was picked as their driver of the year.

Here’s the skinny:

AUTOSPORT once again enlisted, in total privacy, the driver ratings from all ten of the current team principals to figure out who the key men in the paddock believe was the star driver of the year.

With the rankings then converted into points (on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis), the results were collated and have been published for the first time in AUTOSPORT’s F1 Season Review, on sale in newsagents now.

And it is Vettel who has come out on top, over world champion Jenson Button – with last year’s number one rated driver, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, coming a close third.

The full AUTOSPORT F1 Team Principals’ top ten results for 2009 are:

1. Sebastian Vettel 76
2. Jenson Button 67
3. Lewis Hamilton 65
4. Fernando Alonso 39
5. Rubens Barrichello 35
6= Kimi Raikkonen 30
6= Mark Webber 30
8. Felipe Massa 19
9. Robert Kubica 10
10. Adrian Sutil 8

The team boss choices agree with your picks?

Speaking of which, we should have done a “Your View” on driver and car of the year. Watch for it in coming days, if you haven’t already forgotten the 2009 season in the mad rush of 2010 Silly Season action.

    He’s clearly the future of F1. If he’s smart he’s got a future Ferrari or Merc option in the bag already.

    Definitely my favourite for personality and driver of the year

    I would put Kimi ahead of Alonso in 2009 for sure. Not sure why they shafted Rubens and Webber. Good for Sutil for making the list. They had to include Massa didn’t they…sure, he got injured and missed half the season but he’s just so “nice”.

  4. mini696 says:

    My top three would have been Kimi, Webber and Hami, not in that order.

  5. Leslie says:

    He sure was the driver of the year followed by Hamilton and Kimi. Button wouldnt feature in my list of top 3. He would be number 5 after Webber.

  6. Vaibhav Pareek says:

    Vettel is the future, so are the Nicos and Sutil, but which German will be able to pull off the Scumi legacy is hard to tell.Vettel and Sutil have proved what they can do even in uncompetitve cars but Sutil lacks the consistancy.Rosberg has become consevative with williams and it would be intersting to see what he does with Mercedes. and Hulkenberg is quite the next Schumi after all his credentials from other series. Its going to be a British-German battle for supermacy once again on the track, with a few Brazilian interfernce.
