Alexander Wurz won’t be returning to F1 in 2010

According to an interview conducted by motorline.cc, a German-language motorsports website, Alexander Wurz will not be returning to Formula1 in 2010 and particularly not with USF1, as had been speculated.

In the interview, Wurz is quoted as saying, “There have been discussions with USF1, but I would now draw a line under the matter. My priority is one hundred percent of the Peugeot factory team, I’m going to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other races.”  He continued, adding, it “was a decision of the heart – I could earn more money in Formula 1. And I am convinced that it will create USF1 to bring the American technology, American thinking in Formula 1.”  Despite this respect for the team and hope for the future of the American market for F1, Wurz will remain in his first love, sportscar racing.  Wurz, in the interview, described sportscars as heroic, because

You are in such a car just keeps getting closer to death off than in Formula 1. That alone is already at the mass, the Peugeot weighs 1000 kilograms, a Formula 1 around 600 kilograms. This mass is much harder to slow down, especially since both are aerodynamically optimized. When I was in the Peugeot for the first time a ride, I felt the difference in his own body – I braked and I did not slow. A Formula 1 slows down immediately, but with the sports car it was then, and boom, I was already in the guardrail.”

Wurz also mentioned the fact that “I fear that [F1 without fuel stops] will be boring.  The tactic is dropped, because it will then apply all the same strategies.”

With the likelihood that Argentine driver Jose Maria Lopez will sign a contract for USF1 soon, there is only one more seat left with the team, and innumerable young drivers vying for it.  Team principals Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson have long stated a preference for an experienced driver alongside young talent, so it would be logical to presume that those men recently mentioned by Anderson (Pedro de la Rosa, Jacues Villeneuve, and Franck Montangy) would be strong in the running for the seat.  Unless, of course, another curve ball is thrown in the wacky world that is the 2010 F1 silly season.
