Fisichella hints at Sauber seat, Ferrari engine

Fisi 588Giancarlo Fisichella, speaking to reporters at the Bologna Motorshow, hinted that he could be part of the Sauber F1 team next year.

“For the future I know for sure that I’m part of the Ferrari family and that I’m the third driver in 2010,” he said, according to a Ferrari release. Sauber? First of all I’m happy that they can participate in the Championship and I would like to be able to collaborate with a team I know and I got on very well with them: together with Ferrari we’ll see if that will be possible.”

The Sauber team — formerly BMW, now back under Peter Sauber’s control — is rumored to be working on a deal to run Ferrari engines. Fisi’s statements just may be the most solid evidence we have that those talks are well underway.

I know I’ve just ruined Grace’s Sunday, but the rest of us should be ecstatic: A Sauber team with Fisi and Nick Heidfeld will bring us a year of snark from her, the likes of which we’ve never imagined.

Seriously, a strong Ferrari engine in a better-designed Sauber car could fight for points, I’d think. The Force India and Williams teams just might have some unexpected competition.

And here I thought Frentzen would be considered for the 2010 Sauber drive.

But Fisi is good enough for me.

3 double-stints at 3 different teams, that’s got to be a record of some sort.

Nah, bring back JJ Lehto. Kid got a raw deal at Benetton and he’ll pull a triple stint at Sauber if he comes back. ;)

If your going to use Sauber to give drivers seat time why not throw Bianchi in the car

i’m really curious to see the drivers lineup of sauber next year..
I don’t think a Fisichella-Heidfeld lineup is a good idea, it would be better having an expert driver with a youngster to launch as williams does this year.
Both Fisichella and Heidfeld are good to play the experienced role, and with the ferrari deal the italian is in first place even if i think Heidfeld could do better being in the team from a lot of time, and considering Fisi’s age and motivation..
but hiring a strong youngster as sauber did in the past with Kimi, could also provide a lot of money as thei did selling kimi to mclaren..
i’m really courious to see, i think whit heidfeld in mercedes saubers’s lineup will be Fisichella and…Soucek.

I think it depends on how far along they are with their development. They should hire two experienced drivers if they are a bit behind, so they can get back up to the pace. Hire a young driver the next year to bring energy, enthusiasm, and excitement.

Sauber is Swiss… Buemi would be his No. 1 choice – without that choice he’ll go for talent that can grow on the team. Fisi? Nope, i would say not unless Ferrari tell him it’s got to be. Fisi is a nice guy, but he’s done, fork firmly implanted.

Go away Fisi, we dont want you in F1, leave your seat open for a new driver. Oh and take Barachello with you.
