Podcast #150 ~ Bahrain GP Review

It’s 2010 and the first race has run. That means it’s time for the race review podcasts. Join Mark, Paul and I as we discuss the race team-by-team and the spectacle that was…or wasn’t the Bahrain Grand Prix.

    1 whole second… That’s like 1.7 seconds Canadian.

    Jesus.

I don’t know if it’s because it’s 4am or because there was a GP, but this was definitely one of the more enjoyable of the podcasts by you guys I’ve listened to recently. Great job, even on the awards ^.^ Can’t wait for the next race review!

Congrats on #150. Having run and aborted F1 blog after 2 odd years I know the hard work and efforts that all of you have put to have this forum for like minded F1 “spectacle” fans :D, Keep up the good work!!!

  4. Thanks to all of you for the support and kind words. We work very hard at F1B and that’s on top of day jobs so your encouragement goes a long way to helping us remain focused and passionate about what we do and the time it takes to do it. We couldn’t do any of it without you, the F1B fan, and owe our success to your kind patronage.

You wont be getting any thanks from me for the major Webber bashing that went on this podcast. In fact all podcasts I am listening to this week are all bashing him something chronic.

Come-on. He had a bad quali that ruined his race (in which no overtaking took place during the race proper).

I really disagree with Paul that the onboard shots showed him driving poorly. To save the tyres means driving carefully, which may mean not agressivly hitting every single apex out there. Also he was one one of the few cars following another so closely. At least Webber was trying to be in a position to overtake.

      *joking voice off*

Great work as always though guys, I of course forgive you for your trespasses for just this one this podcast… Just dont let it happen again. :) *grin*

Just thinking how lucky I was that Grace wasn’t on it. My god she’ll be giving Webbs a thrashing next time we hear her dulcet tones. I look forward to it though.

But then again Paul knows a heck of a lot more about driving than I do so I shouldn’t disagree with him too much.

        • Monad says:

Well actually Webber said in an interview that faster and he was trying to see if there was a way of going by Jenson. He said he tried all sorts of different lines and staff but it was impossible with out a mistake from him. So maybe his silly driving was an attempt to see if he had any other choices.

Congrats on 150! I have always been curious about the number of listeners/downloaders you have for the podcasts. Can you tell us or is it a secret?

    • Ah…the super secret numbers of F1B. Thanks for the kind words and we are elated to reach 150. It’s a lot of work but we’ve enjoyed them all. I have only recently been tracking DL’s to be honest. That sounds odd I know but I hadn’t found a decent analytic for it. Based upon the new analytic, we are in the neighborhood of 120,000-150,000 DL’s a year. As I have started tracking the RSS and DL link, I think those numbers may be a little low if I use 2008 and 2009′s numbers comparatively based upon the feed from our hosting company which has it closer to 250,000-300,000 which I think is more realistic. Makes me a little suspect of the new analytic. :)

I think we’ll have a better idea after 2010 and it will give us more clarity to the DL totals, episode totals and more. Hope this help sate the curiosity. :)

      • royce amatique says:

Thats pretty impressive. I assume that’s mostly the podcast, which would make it several thousand listeners every week. Now if only you could make every one of them could give you a dollar huh!

      • Excepteuropa1 says:

Maybe all of your big words have scared people off, Todd? Sorry, all of your ‘commodious’ and capacious’ words.

Congrats on 150, gang!! You guys make my commute.

If you are missing the apex, that means you are abusing the car more.the optimum line through a turn is the smoothest line so therefore enables you to take the turn at it’s fastest speed.webber was overdriving which was causing him to lose that line and abuse the fronts.I’ve seen it many times where a driver who is seconds off the pace uses much more of the equipment than the fastest driver on the track.driving a car fast is a matter of getting the balance right for each corner if you don’t do this you go slower and use up more of the car.
    Thanks for listening!
    Paul

I feel like a bit of an idiot ranting against you Paul. My apologies.
But I see Webbers overdriving pointing more towards trying different lines and trying to force Button and Schumi into a mistake rather than bad driving.

Of course I am biased, so I guess my dissapointment with Webbs has resulted in me being touchy over the attacks he is receiving in a lot of podcasts this week.

As a side note would a driver letting off the pace a bit to preserve tyres not want to hit the apex? Or is the ideal line still the same? I thought “what about in the wet? Drivers are always racing different lines then” But I realised that is more to do with there baing more grip away from the rubbered in dry racing line.

  7. The drivers seat says:

No worries as webber would say.that’s what I’m here for.
ideal line is always the same.you would change, agression of turn in,aggression of braking and throttle control to preseve the tyres basically just taking a bit of the edge off a bit in every area
there’s a bit of truth to moving the car around a bit to distract the other drivers but not to that extent he was definatly making mistakes, for sure. And yes driving off line in the rain is all about finding the grip, and that is another very long story.

    • SJ Skid says:

But *you* wouldn’t ever change your aggression of turn in and braking, right Paul? Flat out no matter what.

      • the drivers seat says:

Actually I’m more a consistency driver, keep the tyres under me and pounce at the end once they have nothing left to fight with. I takes a little bit of faith and patience but has seemed to work out for the most part.

        • That is most likely true as Paul and I have chatted at length about it but I must say his sheer unadulterated abuse of the Audi R8 V10 when he gave me a flying lap or 5 was sheer brilliance! The guy is massive folks! Mega! There was a rare moment when I think the tires weren’t squealing. Rest assured, Paul has it in spades when needed…consistency be damned. :)

  8. Just me says:

I always enjoy the podcasts, but this one was very enjoyable (which is a lot to say considering how “boring” the first ‘show’ was). That is if you think that a good race is determined by overtaking. It was refreshing to hear you guys, especially Paul, saying that no F1 race is boring. Yes always room for improvement, but F1 is not a show; F1 is passion. Congratulations exellent job

    • Thank for the kind words mate. Very much appreciated. Paul and Mark are a joy to work with and I really enjoy their insight. It makes it all the more enjoyable when people appreciate it as well. Thanks again.

  9. The drivers seat says:

Well I wasn’t racing anyone then so all bets are off at that point.
I did get in a wee bit of hot water for my generous use of the kerbs.
But it’s all in good fun isn’t it
