Hamilton v Button: It's off

Eurosport - Thu, 03 Jul 19:56:00 2008

Formula One title contender Lewis Hamilton was overruled by his father on Thursday after agreeing to test his fitness against rival driver Jenson Button in a charity triathlon.

In what may go down as another public relations own-goal for the 23-year-old McLaren driver, Hamilton senior turned party-pooper after his son had declared himself up for the challenge during a high-spirited British Grand Prix news conference.

"Lewis accepted the challenge like the good sport he is and in the spirit with which he accepts things," Anthony Hamilton said in a statement.

"But unfortunately for Lewis we are withdrawing him from this.

"We are in the middle of a championship and that is the focus of our attention."

Button had earlier challenged Hamilton to join him in a triathlon on July 27 after the McLaren driver claimed this week that he was the fitter of the two and was willing to prove it.

"What if I say 10,000 pounds ($19,860) to the charity of your choice if you beat me?" the Honda driver said after some good-natured banter between the two.

"Are you trying to steer me off this championship or what?" Hamilton countered.

"It's the only thing I can be competitive in at the moment," replied Button, whose team are struggling to score points while McLaren challenge for both titles.

Questioned further by reporters, and after checking out what was required in the event, Hamilton agreed to take on his compatriot.

"The biggest incentive is, if I do beat you, then you've got some money for a charity which is great," said the McLaren driver.

"However you do have an advantage as you've already done one, and I already know that by doing one you're better the next time, but man, I'm up for it. I'm up for it."

Red Bull's David Coulthard, the third driver in the conference who had just announced his retirement at the end of the season, said he was too old at 37 to join them but volunteered to carry the water bottles.

Hamilton has twice led the championship this season but arrives at his home circuit 10 points behind Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa after two races without points.

The Briton, hailed as a hero last season when he finished championship runner-up as a rookie, has had a rockier road this year.

He has been criticised for saying his decision to move to Switzerland was due to a desire for privacy rather than for tax reasons and came in for more flak after he drove into the back of Kimi Raikkonen's stationary Ferrari in the Canadian Grand Prix pit lane last month.

Most embarrassing of all was a sponsor appearance in Turkey in May when he was lowered by wire onto a theatre stage to play the role of Greek god Apollo while wearing his branded McLaren race suit.

"In the pantheon of ridiculous publicity stunts, it may rate among the greatest," The Times newspaper said of that appearance.

So, in typical FIA fasion, Mosely has put forward a request to the teams for them to come up with new rules for F1.

Here is my rewriting of Mosely's letter to the teams.

Dear slobbering ingrates,

The FIA feels that we haven't screwed with the rules enough in the last few years so we think a thorough restructuring of the rulebook is in order. While Bernie thinks he has power in this arena, I will show him what true power is. It is clear that GP racing costs way too much money and is not road relevant anymore. So in an attempt to curry favor with independent teams, we want to reduce the cost of racing as much as possible. We also want to make sure that the manufacturers feel there is added benefit to their 1000 employee teams and multi-million euro budgets.

So, we want you incompetent fools to come up with new detailed rules and regulations for the 2011 season. Keep in mind that these rules should encompass the following goals as outlined by my own personal ego.

-Reduce fuel consumption by 20% by 2011 while maintaining current speeds.
-Reduce fuel consumption by 50% by 2015 while maintaining current speeds.
-Reduce costs drastically so that back of the grid independent teams can operate profitably.
-Manufacturer based teams should provide complete drive train assemblies to independent teams for 2 million euros (complete with KERS).
-Cut costs by restrictions on simulators, CFD and other home-base facilities.
-Cut costs by ten race drive trains, long life chassis components, no gear ratio changes over life of drivetrain, parc ferme extended to full weekend.
-Variable aerodynamics.
-Improve the racing so that cars do not lose performance when close to each other. Possibly change aero so that car behind is faster than car ahead (read Hanford device).

Oh, by the way. If you can't get your act together (which I am counting on) within three months, I will go ahead and draft the 2011 rules personally. In that case, I will be the one holding the leash and paddle, while you are wearing the ball gags and chains.

Love,
Max

P.S. If you want a preview of the 2011 rules, you need to look no further than my ideas for F2. They are the bomb, don't you think?

In the United States, we have a weekly newspaper called National Speed Sport News. It is (self titled) "America's Weekly Motorsports Authority." If there is a news source that covers racing more comprehensively than NSSN, I'd like to know what it is because NSSN covers everything, and I mean everything raced with 4 wheels. Founder Chris Economaki is one of the most respected motorsports journalist in the world.
That being said (sorry again NC), they have a feature called the NSSN Power Ranking which "ranks the top 10 drivers from all forms of motorsports." Here's the list from the June 25 issue. (make sure you're not drinking anything while you read the list, because you will be laughing.)
1. Kyle Busch (NASCAR Srint Cup)
2. Donny Schatz (World of Outlaws)
3. Scott Dixon (IRL)
4. Tony Schumacher (NHRA Top Fuel Drag Racing)
5. No. 20 NASCAR Nationwide Team (NASCAR Nationwide Series) :? (too complicated to explain)
6. Felipe Massa (F1)
7. Billy Moyer (Dirt Late Models)
8. Craig Dollansky (World of Outlaws)
9. Scott Pruett/Memo Rojas (Rolex Grand Am)
10. Kasey Kahne (NASCAR Sprint Cup)
Honorable Mention. Brad Sweet (USAC Midgets)
As a student at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg I am conducting an empirical study on Formula One and motor sport clubs. This study is part of my diploma thesis at the chair for business economics (department for industrial management) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Kai-Ingo Voigt.

The following questionnaire enquires about your personal opinion regarding Formula One and motor sport clubs.

I would be very grateful if you support me with this academic project.
The voluntary online questionnaire should take about 8 minutes to complete. Link: http://www.f1-motorsportclubs.de

The objective of this survey is to determine a reliable statement regarding the target group for motor sport clubs and their supporters.

It goes without saying that your responses will be treated confidentially, and will not be used for any other purpose. They are exclusively used as data for this academical study.

All participants have a chance to win a Carrera racetrack at the end of the survey.

DC to announce retirement
Scots career draw to a close

Jul.1 (GMM) The strong rumour in the days before the British grand prix is that David Coulthard will announce his retirement from formula one this weekend at Silverstone.
'Tyre warmer ban is scrapped'
Monday 30th June 2008

The FIA have reportedly scrapped plans to ban tyre warmers from Formula One next season.

Motorsport's governing body has proposed the idea of banning tyre warmers next year when F1 sees the return of slick tyres.

The idea was greeted with some skepticism with drivers voicing concerns over their safety should they fail to get their tyres up to temperature quick enough.

Bridgestone, though, countered the arguments with plans to introduce a new type of rubber that would be easier to warm up, which was tested earlier this year with mixed reactions.

Proposals were also made regarding imposing a minimum tyre pressure limit, however, F1's Technical Working Group soon ascertained that it would be impossible to police this.

And as a result Autosport reports that the FIA have agreed not to ban tyre warmers for the 2009 F1 season.

Bourdais' future in Formula 1 uncertain
30 June 2008

Sebastien Bourdais has said he hasn't got a clue what he will be doing in 2009. The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver has scored two points so far but has been over classed by his team mate Sebastian Vettel. "If I get fired then so be it," Bourdais said.

After winning the Champ Car series four times in a row Bourdais finally saw his dream come true in becoming a Formula 1 driver. The French man might have shown he has the quality in the US, but his dream was to become a Formula One driver one day. The Scuderia Toro Rosso team signed him up for the 2008 season but as the team's future is uncertain so is the future of Bourdais in F1.

Speaking about his current performance in Formula 1 Bourdais told our colleagues at ITV: "Obviously if you start looking at this then you can get worried, so there are two attitudes to this. You can completely disregard it, which is pretty much the approach I choose to adopt - after all, we've only had eight races so we're not even mid-season yet.

"I can't really say I feel that I've shown what I wanted to show this year so far. What happen will happen. I'm kind of a free man. If I get fired because of this or because of that then so be it. What's really important for me is that I give my best. And I am giving my best, even if it's not paying off right now.

"But you can only influence so many parameters, so I will have no regrets, that's for sure. I'm doing the very best I can, and if it's not enough in some people's opinion then fine. Right now I'm focused on 2008. I can only hope I'll be able to show what I can do with a car that has slick tyres."

Return of the Senna name?

Formula 1 » Senna in 'intensive talks' with BMW for '09.
Friday, 27th June 2008

GP2 Series title challenger Bruno Senna 'determined' to get an F1 test with BMW as he bids to break into the top flight in 2009, it has been claimed.
Bruno Senna is in ‘intensive talks' with BMW-Sauber regarding a possible Formula 1 role in 2009, reports have hinted.

German publication Sport Bild states that the young Brazilian – sitting second in the GP2 Series title standings with victory at Monaco already under his belt in 2008 – could become either a test driver or even race driver for the Munich and Hinwil-based concern next year.

There have been numerous suggestions in recent weeks that Nick Heidfeld's days at BMW are numbered, with the experienced German having struggled so far to get a grip on Bridgestone's current Potenza rubber and lagging some way behind the pace of former world championship leading team-mate Robert Kubica eight races into the campaign.

Senna is the nephew of the late triple F1 world champion Ayrton Senna, and his career has been closely tracked by his uncle's long-time friend and former McLaren team-mate Gerhard Berger, now co-owner of Scuderia Toro Rosso.

“I will help Bruno, and his family who look out for his career, to do it,” the Austrian ten-time grand prix winner admitted. “His development is obvious, and there is no doubt he has talent.”

Sport Bild claims that Berger discussed Senna at Magny-Cours with BMW Motorsport Director and former colleague Dr Mario Theissen. An insider confirmed to the magazine: “Senna is determined to get a test, and then BMW will decide.”

STR, sister outfit Red Bull Racing and Williams are also said to be potentially interested in procuring the services of the 24-year-old, who is backed by McLaren-Mercedes sponsor Santander. For now, however, Senna insists he is remaining focussed on the task in-hand – lifting the GP2 crown with iSport International.

“I must continue to push and win races and podiums,” he asserted. “Then I can dream a little bit more.”

Lewis Hamilton's taste of yacht racing proved more dramatic than expected yesterday when the boat he was riding on was disqualified from its class win for a pre-start collision.

The McLaren ace had been on board the Open 60 Hugo Boss yacht in the Round the Island Race - one of the world's largest yacht races - which took place off the Isle of Wight on Saturday.

The race attracted a record 1,800 competitors, with Lewis joining skipper Alex Thomson and triple Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie aboard the Huge Boss boat.

Unfortunately the crew collided with a rival prior to the start of the race and were subsequently disqualified, although they have announced their intention to protest.
Click here to find out more!

Ironically before the race Hamilton had said he expected the start to be one of the highlights of his day at sea.

"I'm looking forward to the start, no fixed start position, just all those boats fighting it out for the best space on the start line," Hamilton said on Friday.

"I am interested to see all the technology that goes behind this boat and the similarities between racing on the water and racing on the track."

so to recap this month, The hamiltons have crashed or smashed up, A Porsche, A Mclaren a Ferrari and now a big ass sailing boat. Bet their insurance form makes a good read...

He looked up and saw that traffic in front of him had stopped. He came into my lane, and hit my car head-on. My girlfriend and I managed to escape the accident with nothing more than a few cuts and bruises. The ironic thing is that my girlfriend had just done a speech for a class a few weeks ago, about why you should not use a cell phone while driving. He apparently was not in the same class. Either way, we were both very lucky to be alive. Please don't repeat the mistake the guy made. Don't use your cell phone while operating a vehicle.
