Will Power took the inaugural race at Sao Paulo for Penske this weekend, but the remainder of the Penske and Ganassi organizations was nowhere to be seen on the podium.

1st - Power
2nd - RHR (Andretti)
3rd - Vitor Miera (Foyt)
4th - Rafa Matos (de Ferran Luczo Dragon)
5th - Dan Wheldon (Panther)

The race was red flagged for a bit due to a monsoon rainshower that left huge amounts of standing water on the track. By the time the track workers got the standing water resolved, the track was almost dry which prompted most of the field to pit for slicks before the green flag waved.

The end of the race was fantastic, with RHR passing 2 cars on the same lap to take the lead after the green. Briscoe later retook the lead but RHR dogged him until he made a mistake and put it in the tires. With just a couple laps left, Power took the lead on the turn 11 hairpin and gassed into the distance.

The track layout ended up being superb! The surface was a bit 'San Jose' bumpy, but the long straights leading into slow corners made for great overtaking zones. There was a bunch of passing at turn 5 and turn 11, both after long straights. Turn 11 had a 0.9mi straight leading into the final hairpin.... and no tilke chicane to mess it up. According to Cottman, the initial design had a chicane on the backstretch, but the drivers encouraged him to take it out. Overall, there were 95 passes (according to IndyCar timing and scoring) during the race.

Unfortunately, the track surface had issues. The concrete Sambodromo straight leading into the turn 1 chicane was extremely slick which was causing wheelspin in 5th gear for some of the competitors. They postponed qualifying until sunday so they could diamond grind the concrete so the track would take rubber. This fixed the problem but still left the first few laps of the event with a huge cloud of concrete dust, even though they washed the area several times after the work.

As for the rest of the track, the asphalt was extremely bumpy. This was especially apparent in the approach to turn 5 where several overtaking maneuvers were thwarted by massive bumps. This resulted in an accordian wreck which saw Dan Wheldon hit the bump while trying to late brake on Tagliani and Kanaan into that corner. Wheldon ended up collecting them all, but was able to keep going and finish 5th.

Before next years race at Brazil, most of the asphalt is going to be torn up and have a proper underlayment made so the surface should be smoother next year. Big plus!

I have been a non-fan of street course events for some time, but the IndyCar race at St. Pete is one of my favorite races of the season. Now this race in Brazil looks to be another quality course layout. I have to say that Sonoma, Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen have not produced anything close to the competitive racing at St Pete or Brazil.

Next up, St. Pete! I will be wearing my Dollar General attire rooting for Graham Rahal in Sarah Fisher's car.

MEDALS!!!

Okay that was just sarcasm. No if they want to fix the racing then one thing needs to be done and done before the next race. REMOVE THE DIFFUSERS! That right just remove them. Don't change anything else on the car. I don't care if it's part of the floor or not. Get a hacksaw and cut it off. The can be done at the next race when the cars are taken down for scrutineering. Charlie Whiting is stand there and under the grounds of safety demands that all diffuser be removed. Now if that happens we would see some driving for sure. Cars would be mega twitchy and with no testing no one could figure out a way around this ban. What do you guys think?

I must say that I am really quite surprised that even the teams themselves found this race to be boring. I’m wondering when the last time they actually watched an F1 race was, as I personally don’t think this race was vastly different from most during any season over the last fifteen years. In fact, all of the comments on F1b concerning Bahrain is making me question my own love of the sport.
One continuous argument that I see in favor of Formula One is that it is the pinnacle of motorsport, which I wholeheartedly agree with and I do not think can be argued. I hate to use a fashion analogy, but that’s like saying “Look at this outfit that I bought! Sure, it’s horrendously ugly, but it’s Gucci and cost umpteen thousand dollars, so it must be great!!”
I think that some of us may be jaded for the good ol’ days of F1, whenever we each feel those days might have been. Granted, we have had some great seasons of late, points-wise, that have gone right down to the wire (2007, 2008), but how many great, exciting RACES have we had of late? Unless the rain gods bless us, not too many, me thinks.
This brings me to the real question that I am now asking myself. Is Formula One about great races? I know that we all really, really want it to be, but is it really? How long, if ever, has it been that one could sit and watch a full season and, race after race, say “Wow, that was awesome!” The ‘80s? The ‘70s? Certainly not the ‘90s of ‘00s. Again, great races here and there, but not often, I personally feel.
I don’t know that we can count this season out after just one race. As I mentioned, I am really surprised by the ‘uproar’ following it’s blandness. But was it really any different? No passing. Fuel strategy. Tire strategy. Qualify well and you finish well. Most passing, if any, in the pits.
That’s F1. That’s what we love, whether we know why or not. I don’t have an answer as to how to fix it. Instead, I’ve discovered the question is why do I love it? Why do I wake up at 6:30 on a Sunday morning when I just lost an hour of sleep anyway?!
The first thing my wife asked me when she woke up (after a full night’s sleep like a normal, sane person) was, “How was the race?” I answered that it really sucked to wait and wait and wait for the season to start again, only to be reminded how boring an F1 race usually is. Now you guys and gals at F1b are making it even worse.
I hate you guys. Aw, who am I kidding, I can’t stay mad at you. You’re like my F1; I love you, I just don’t know why.

Or was it just this race?

I can't recall being this dispirited at the beginning on a F1 season. As the procession formed early, my expectations began to sink. I remained buoyed by naively assuming tyre degradation was going to generate spectacle. Instead it seemed those bristling, and exciting machines were nursed around the track - did any driver give their car too much willy, and get it all messy? I honestly can't remember, maybe I nodded off. It just felt against the spirit of Formula 1.

Then again, taking away aerodynamic grip to improve spectacle also feels against the spirit too. I think F1 should represent the pinnacle of automotive technology, and I can't help but place stupendous down-force in that category. But yeah, overtaking...

Thinking about it, I realised how much I enjoy watching qualifying, and how I'm often more excited after qualifying, rather than after the race. Which brought me to the beginning of my F1 passion, and I race I still remember as terrifically exciting - Japan, 1994.

I hope this is correct, but due to an incident that resulted in a marshal being injured, a safety car was deployed, and for some reason, the race was to be decided by aggregate lap times. I remember loving the tension of multiple drivers putting their car on the edge to succeed. As I remember it, there was action all over the track, with drivers working hard to bang out top times whilst still negotiating traffic. Perhaps it was artificial, but I don't remember the race drama being stifled by on-track bottlenecks due to difficulties in overtaking.

Maybe I'm using rose coloured glasses, maybe it was just Murray Walker, or maybe I was just easily impressed back then, but I wouldn't actually mind seeing a race format based on a similar lap time aggregation system. You could hardly have any less racing, traffic would still be a concern, and I'll assume you'd still have competitive drivers dicing which each other on track. Again, it's probably against the spirit of Formula1. But right now I'm so jaded, when I really don't want to be, that I've turned to wistful fancy

Thanks for indulging me, and thanks for an awesome site.

Everyone has an opinion of the race. Here are some things that stood out to me anyway so I thought I would throw them out there

--The Parade of champions looked like it was pretty cool. too bad they don't include that in the coverage somehow... of course who would be interested in that except people who like F1 (wait a second)
-- From Several angles Mika Hakkinen looks like he's sporting a massive combover
-- Why do the HRT cars have drivers names on the sides in big bold lettering. Can't they remember the number of their car
-- I hope all the races are as hot and dry as this one just because I won't have to see any pictures of Vettel wearing that stupid Red bull knit cap
--Jarno Trulli was not a mobile chicane
-- Standing still or racing hard.. The Renault is and ugly car
-- their is going to be more strategy this season in Qualifying than in the race..kind of sad really.
-- SPEED TV should not advertise live coverage if it is taped delayed 5 minutes or whatever...that is not LIVE that is TAPED you A--Holes
-- I don't miss Windsor one bit
-- Why can't F1 have more than one race every 6 weeks or so. Seriously the first back to back race weekends are in May. the cutting edge of racing technology must be using wind sailing ships to transport their equipment. stefan GP has already got equipment at Abu Dhabi for gods sake

Feel free to add on or tell me i'm full of crap
