If you’re a Nico Rosberg fan, then today’s news that he’s inked a new contract extension through 2016 at Mercedes should make you happy. Nico’s rise to a top team started with a stint at the struggling Williams F1 team and he’s made the most of his career by moving to Mercedes, then discovering that Michael Schumacher was his teammate and now Lewis Hamilton. Yet, he’s managed to stay competitive and in the hunt.

The rumors of a possible move to Mercedes by Fernando Alonso were born on the praise that Mercedes boss, Dieter Zetsche, had for the Spaniard during his home grand prix but those rumors seem to have withered on the vine. Rosberg’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, has a year left on his three-year deal and as he was recently rated as the richest athlete in the UK at £68m, one assumes the compensation and life at Mercedes is something he’ll be keen to renew leaving a possible spot for Alonso unlikely.

Rosberg has four wins to his F1 career at Mercedes and is currently second in the driver’s championship behind teammate Lewis Hamilton.

  • Nico is a known quantity… Lewis could start dissing the time at any moment. Well done, Nico. You’ve certainly earned the drive.. even if your teammate calls you a rich kid.

    • strike time…replace with team…

    • There was a time when I was a little concerned for him toiling away at Williams F1. The team were very adrift at that time and I wondered if was going to slowly move out of F1. The move to Merc, like Lewis’s, was a great move. Too bad Schumacher and Brawn couldn’t be there to enjoy it with Nico but Lewis is getting the job done in fine fashion so Merc are most likely happy with their changes…including re-signing Nico.
