The National Guard will continue it’s involvement in the IndyCar series sponsoring the #15 Honda powered car driven by Graham Rahal in 2014.

RACER’s Robin Miller reported in October that the National Guard was going to RLL in 2014, but no official announcement was made my the team or the Guard itself. Panther Racing, which has carried the National Guard colors since 2008, filed an appeal and it was officially denied last month.

“This is an historic day for all of us at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing,” said Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in a team press release. “I can’t overstate how proud and how privileged we feel to represent the men and women of the Army National Guard. This is a huge responsibility that each of us feels and we are looking forward to working with the National Guard to achieve their goals.

“And I can’t imagine a better ambassador for those men and women than Graham, as an American, driving the National Guard Dallara-Honda IndyCar,” added Bobby Rahal.

Graham Rahal was equally as excited about the new partnership.

“I am really over the moon about driving the National Guard car,” he said. “Being an American and an extremely patriotic person, I am very proud of the men and women who fight for us and keep this great country safe and free. To have the opportunity to represent the National Guard and all that they do both here and abroad means more than anybody could ever know.”

What remains yet to be announced are plans for the second seat at RLL. Bobby Rahal announced last month that he wanted to get the #15 fully sponsored before making plans for the second car.

Rahal told the Associated Press that the ultimate goal would be to be a successful 2 car operation, but if having 2 cars wouldn’t add to Graham’s effort, then they wouldn’t do it.

“I want a teammate that can add to what we are doing. I don’t want a teammate that isn’t helping setup the cars. We need somebody who can put something into the program,” he said. “And the problem is, there is really a small list of drivers who can add to the program. A lot of the great ones are already taken.”

Good news for RLL especially as it took so long to be confirmed after the National Guard left Panther. Was starting to wonder if the deal had fallen through.
